When Chevrolet unveiled their SSR concept at the 2000 Detroit Auto Show, most observers assumed that the stunning design was just another one-off dream machine that would never see production. After refining a few details like moving the mirrors and adding side markers, Chevy shocked everyone and released the Super Sport Roadster. Recalling Chevrolet's popular 1947-1953 pickup trucks, the SSR's bulbous fenders required special deep-draw steel and a special manufacturing process, but the resulting appearance is well worth the effort. The black interior looks sharp against the black exterior. This has a terrific coupe-like profile, but one of the things that really keeps the SSR in demand is the folding hardtop. With the touch of a button, the roof neatly stows away without a trace to give this the look of a roadster pickup. The SSR also introduced new technology to GM, including the deep-draw fenders which were previously impossible to create. But all that's really beside the point because this SSR looks awesome! Basic black is kind of a low-key color on the flashy little pickup, but it does highlight the awesome body shapes, accenting the curvaceous fenders and tying in neatly with the SSR badges on the doors. There is a well-coordinated look inside and out that you expect from a true street machine. This includes power seats, power windows, power locks, keyless entry/alarm, tilt steering column, cruise control, cup holder, dual front airbags, side airbags, anti-lock brakes, power steering, and an upgraded Kenwood CD player. And because you have both a rear wind deflector and cold-blowing A/C, you can enjoy top-down driving in the summertime. 2005 is an ideal year in the SSR's brief life. This was when Chevrolet added two key upgrades: the LS2 motor and a six-speed manual transmission: and this one has them both! This fuel-injected powerplant was shared with the Corvette so the 390hp represented a 30% upgrade in power over the previous year. The Tremec six-speed lets you unleash the fury of this high-performance 6.0-liter pickup. While this was built to look like a truck, it was also made to be driven like a muscle machine.
