Description
Here is an intriguing piece of advertising in the form of a ceramic doll. The Billiken Shoe Company of St. Louis. Billiken Shoes was a brand of children's shoes made by the McElroy - Sloan Shoe Company of St. Louis, Missouri. That company started in 1910. There are EXTREMELY FEW examples of Billiken Shoe advertising on-line, much less the same item. Closest was a young boy "Billy Kid".This ceramic doll features a orange Dutch head dress, labelled "The Billy Kid". Her yellow apron has "Wears Billiken Shoes" on front. Rear is impressed "made in Japan".
The mascot to St. Louis University is the Billiken. It looks nothing like this doll. However, the Billiken, the God of the way things should be, was a popular motif in the 1920's. It was also invented in St. Louis. I don't know what the significance of the name Billiken is in St. Louis, but it seems to be a running theme. Possibly this Billiken gave rise to the SLU mascot version?
