    Description

Rare and original, ca1901 Large Size, Tin Lithographed Advertising Serving Tray that Advertises Luehrmann’s Saloon and Brewing Company of Memphis, Tennessee. This wonderful, large size oval shaped, Tin Litho Beer Tray measures approx. 13 1/2" by 16” and features a wonderful illustration of a charming little girl.
The Tray features a beautiful image of a young, blonde haired little girl with an angelic countenance. Text at the bottom of the image area reads “Compliments of Luehrmann’s, Memphis”.
Henry A. Luehrmann was born 27 August 1841 in Melle, Germany. When Henry was 15, he came to the United States and settled in St. Louis where there was a large German population. There he obtained a job as a clerk in a brewery, while going to school at night. When the Civil War began, Luehrmann enlisted in the Union Army and after the war, settled in Memphis where he again became a clerk in a brewery, but he soon owned the brewery. Leuhrmann soon opened his own Saloon in Memphis. Next he added a restaurant named "The Terrace Garden" and then he opened another brewery. With increasing popularity, he built his original hotel on Main Street on the site of the Terrace Garden. Luehrmann was becoming a very wealthy man. After a fire destroyed his first hotel, Lueuhrmann moved across the street and rebuilt. And this was the grand Leuhrmann's hotel-restaurant that is remembered so well in Memphis. The 38 room hotel was for men only - with one exception. The Metropolitan Opera contralto, Ernestine Schumann-Heink, was a friend of Mr. and Mrs. Leuhrmann, and she was allowed to have a room in this all-male world. The money to build this fine hotel came mainly from beer. Leuhrmann had become very wealthy as the bottler and dealer in Schlitz Beer as well as the brewer of his own brands.
The Advertising Tray is not signed by the manufacturer. We believe that the Tray was likely manufactured by either The Meek & Beach Co. or by the Tuscarora Advertising Company (both of Coshocton, Ohio) as we have seen other, similar "stock" Advertising Trays of this size made by both companies. The Chromolithography is of the very highest quality as would be expected from the outstanding craftsmen employed by these premier makers of tin lithographed advertising items but we cannot be sure of the manufacturer.
This beautiful ca1901 Luehrmann Brewing Company and Saloon Beer Tray is not a reproduction, reissue or restrike but is an original, turn of the 20th century Tin Lithograph Tray manufactured for and distributed by the Henry Leuhrmann of Memphis.
This charming, turn of the 20th century, Tin Litho Beer Tray is in very good condition - the lithography is beautiful and the Tray displays nicely. There are scattered surface blemishes and some spots of surface soiling throughout the image area. There is a small, shallow bend to the rim of the Tray at the top edge and the back side of the tray has some light wear as can be seen in the scans below.
A rare and original, ca1901 Large Size, Tin Lithographed Advertising Beer Tray that Advertises Luehrmann’s Saloon and Brewing Company of Memphis, Tennessee and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
