Description
Handcrafted Fulani Cuff Bracelet. One of the most striking gold ornaments found in the Sahel (lower Sahara) are the earrings worn by the Fulani women of southern Mali. Gold is formed into a square rod which is marked down the center of each side, from this mark it is repeatedly heated and hammered into its four blades and then twisted into shape. These gold earrings could reach a weight of 300 grams each, a pair this large would be the ultimate sign of wealth. The Fulani name for these earrings is kwotene kange.
This cuff is SOLID BRASS and made using the same technique as the gold earrings. Each cuff is a unique work of art and may vary slightly from the picture!
•Approximate width is 1".
•Bracelet will bend to fit most wrists.
•Light weight!
The Fulani or Peul are a traditionally nomadic people of traders and cattle herders who live throughout W. Africa. Many have now settled to a life of farming although some still continue to follow their most prized possessions (cattle) seasonally in search of pasture. The Fulani are very proud of their appearance and place great emphasis on their adornments.
Thanks for stopping! Everything I have for sale is handpicked by me. I travel to Africa 2 - 3 times a year to buy the best quality items available in the marketplace. This has been my sole occupation for 25 years now. I sell to store, galleries and boutiques across the country and also exhibit twice yearly at NYNOW. This is something I really enjoy doing, I get to travel and interact with people who appreciate and culture and workmanship that goes into each item.
Have fun shopping, if you have any questions I will do my best to answer them.
