PAUL SIMON & BILLY JOEL - BACK AT THE RANCH - MONTAUK - 1990.On Aug. 30, 1990, Rusty Leaver turned his theory into reality. He opened the gates at his Deep Hollow Ranch in Montauk to about 10,000 ticketholders for an outdoor rock concert featuring his friend and Montauk neighbor Paul Simon. When it was over, the first ''Back at the Ranch'' concert had raised 0,000 to help prevent the erosion-imperiled Montauk Lighthouse from toppling into the sea.
Two successful ranch concerts later, the development team at Long Island University's Southampton College decided to adopt the same model. They mounted their first rock concert fund-raiser as a benefit for the college's marine science scholarship fund on Aug. 31, 1992. With a ceiling on ticket sales of 5,000, the concert -- the last stop on a 40-city tour for Crosby, Stills & Nash -- was smaller in scale and a little more formal than the ranch concerts. But it was more successful than even its biggest boosters had hoped, raising ,000 for the scholarship fund. And now it, too, has become an eagerly anticipated annual event.
