The Yak-28 is a Soviet multipurpose jet combat aircraft that was produced in various versions. The most common modifications were a front-line bomber (NATO Brewer classification), an interceptor aircraft (NATO classification Firebar), as well as a reconnaissance aircraft, an electronic warfare aircraft and a training vehicle (NATO classification Maestro). The plane made its first flight on March 5, 1958. Serial production of the aircraft was completed in 1971. A total of 1,180 aircraft had been built by this time (among them the largest number was the Yak-28P version of the interceptor fighter). The Yak-28 multipurpose combat aircraft was not exported
